002 ; 003 ; 008 |
Fraserburgh, a parish, containing the port town of Fraserburgh and the village of Broadsea in the north-eastern extremity of Aberdeenshire.
It is bounded by the German Ocean, and by the parishes of Rathen, Strichen, Aberdour, Tyrie and Pitsligo. But a considerable district of it is detached from the main body about a mile and a half to the South West. by the intervention of Rathen. The length of the whole parish South-westward including the interjected tract of Rathen is 8 miles , and its breadth about 3 ½ miles. The coast extends about four miles, and is partly sandy, and partly rocky. Kinnairds Head, in the N. lat [North latitude] 57º 42' and W. long. [West longitude] 2º 1', is a high promontory projecting into the sea. It is generally believed to be the Promontorimo Taxalium of Ptolemy, being the turning - point into the Estuarium Vararie or Moray Firth. There is an old tower on this promontory called the Wine tower, with a cave under it, and at one time probably connected with the ajoining - house now the lighthouse. On the south-East of Kinnairds Head is the beautiful bay of Fraserburgh three miles in length. Along the shore the soil is in general good; but the interior parts are gravelly. Except the hill of Mormond situated on the south-west boundary and elevated 800 feet above the sea level, the whole surface is nearly flat, gradually rising, however, from the coast to its most distant and elevated district. The sea has receded from the land in some places, and encroached on it in others.
The parish at one time abounded with wood, and there are some fine old trees at Philorth house. the Seat of Lord Saltoun, to which several beautiful and extensive plantations have been added. Granite, limestone and Ironstone abound; and there are chaly beate springs in different places. The principal antiquities are the remains of an old tower (see site of College sheet 3/1.5) the site of a chapel called the college (see site of college sheet 3/4 4). Lord Saltoun is the most extensive landowner and there are several others. Population in 1861 4,510. No of Electors 39 Valuation £14.509.13.3d
This parish is in the presbytery of Deer, and Synod of Aberdeen. Patron Lord Saltoun
The parish was originaly called Philorth: and that name is still retained by its principal Estate. |

"Leaving Fraserburgh by the Back Street, and proceeding by the Banff turnpike for nearly half a mile, we turn off to the old Banff road, near Broadsea, in order to reach the coast line, where in a field on the farm of Chapel Hill, and close by the beach, there formerly stood a religious house. About thirty years ago the tenant, in digging out the foundation, found human bones. This sacriligious invasion of consecrated ground, and disturbance of the dead, is a new feature in the Scottish character, of which we have but little reason to pique ourselves. "

The Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland |
002 ; 003 |
A gulf in the extreme north east of Scotland, a sea rather than a bay, or an estuary; the largest projection, and at the same time one of the most regular, which the ocean makes into the Scotland Coasts & Loosely defined, but with reference chiefly to its interior waters it is the Estuarium Vararis of ancient geographers.
Its limits as assigned by the modern hydrography of the country, are somewhat various, and not very distinctly understood; but on the whole, they distribute into two easily ascertained parts, an exterior and an interior.
The Exterior firth comprehends all the open sea south-west of a line between Duncansby-head in Caithness-shire and Kinnairds head in Aberdeenshire, onward to the entrance of the inner firth between Tarbetness in Ross-shire and Burgh-head in Morayshire. It blends with the German Ocean on the North-East, and, along the artifical line of connexion with it measures nearly 80 miles; it has the Counties of Caithness, Ross and Cromarty on the West and measures on that side about 70 miles; and it has Morayshire, Banffshire, and Aberdeenshire on the south, and measures along that coast about 57 miles:

"A few yards west of the Wine Tower stands the Castle of Kinnairds - head built about the year 1600 in the form of a parallelogram, thirty-nine feet by twenty-seven, still entire and strong, and lately repaired. Being on an eminence, and four stories high it commands an extensive prospect." Collections of the Shires p [page 432]
"The Castle of Kinnairds Head is is built in the form of a parallelogram thirty-nine feet by twenty-seven.
The tower which is the only remaining portion of the castle is now converted into a lighthouse. It is built on an eminence and has four stories besides the lantern chamber added for the reception of the lighthouse appuratus. It was let on lease in 1787 to the Northern Lighthouse Company, and fitted up by them for that purpose. The Castle commands an extensive view. Looking westward the eye traverses the whole expanse of the Moray Firth, resting on the far off hills of Caithness which at the distance of sixty miles melt into the soft haze of the dipping clouds.
Pratt's Buchan
The lantern of the lighthouse stands one hundred and twenty feet above high water mark. It was fitted up with a fixed dioptrick light: which is seen at sea at a distance of 15 nautical miles. At first the reflectors were composed of "facets of silvered glass" one point only being brought into the curve of the parabola. In 1820 copper reflectors silvered and formed to the parabolic curve were substituted. These remained till the 15th September 1851 when the Caladioptrick light was first used. This is said to be five times stronger than the light from the reflectors, and that the light reflected from the parabolic reflectors is about three hundred and fifty times as intense as an unassisted light: The one lamp by which the light is now produced, has four wicks, consumes as much oil as eighteen argand lamps and requires for its support from seven hundred and eighty to eight hundred gallons annually: |

At the extreme west end of Fraserburgh on a slightly elevated piece of ground is the site of an Old College: a few building stones are still lying about to mark the spot.
"The College which stood on the cross still bearing its name, had no connection with the buildings erected by Sir A. Fraser. The site of the older college, which for the sake of distinction may be termed the Monks College, was traceable as late as the early part of the present century, but it is now entirely obliterated by the plough

"In the west end of Fraserburgh is an old quadrangular Tower, the roof is dismantled: but three stories remain containing so many arched rooms one above another. By a charter from the Crown dated at Edinburgh
1st July 1592. besides privileges for the Town of Fraserburgh, powers were given to Sir Alexander Fraser his male heirs and assignees, to erect and endow a College and University, to appoint a Rector a Principal a Sub-principal and all the Proffessors for teaching the different services they should think proper and necessary, and to make laws for the preservation of good order, and to enforce them, and every immunity and privilege of an University is granted."
"In the year 1597 the General Assembly recommended Mr Charles Frame Minister here to be principal. The above mentioned Tower was the beginning of the buildings designed for the College. But the purposes of the grant have not been further fulfilled:"

New Statistical Account
The Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland |

Fraserburgh, a post-town, a sea-port and a burgh of regality, stands on the north-west side of the bay of Fraserburgh, and south side of Kinnairds head. 17 ½ miles north-north-west of Peterhead. 22 miles East of Banff and 42 North of Aberdeen. It was founded early in the 16 Century, on the Estate of Fraser of Philorth; and was constituted a burgh of regality in 1613. It no doubt took the name of Fraserburgh from Fraser of Philorth, either originally as lord of the soil or subsequently as the procurer of its charter and it seems to have very soon communicated its name to the parish. It is neatly built of a square form, with most of the Streets, which are spacious, crossing each other at right angles.
Numerous improvements have been made in recent times. Elegant and comfortable houses have been erected and new streets laid out

out on a symmetrical plan. The cross, errected by Sir Alexander Fraser, was
a fine structure, of a hexagonal figure, with three equidistant hexagonal abutments, a ground area of about 500 feet, and a surmounting stone pillar 12 feet high, bearing the British arms and the arms of Fraser; but it has been greatly curtailed and altered.
The places of Worship and the parochial schoolhouse are creditable structures. The town house is a handsome building erected in 1855, with a dome. "Fraserburgh," said the New Statistical Account in 1840, "is one of the old burghs of regality, having its government vested in Lord Saltoun, the Superior, two bailies, a dean of guild, a Treasurer, and a Council.
His lordship has the right and authority of provost, with power to nominate and appoint yearly the new magistrates and council, with the advice and consent of the old, By the Charter, the feuars and incorporated Brethern of the guild have liberty to exercise all kinds of trade and merchandise. Those who are not freemen, may be debarred this privelege: but for a long period this exclusion has not been insisted on. The feuars are obliged to uphold the public works of the town, but for doing so the market customs were granted them. and in lieu of some privileges which they possessed over commonable land, they have obtained others from Lord Saltoun, which now rent at [£3.8.0] sterling per annum. These funds have been hitherto applied to repairing the Streets and opening new ones, but chiefly to bringing water into the town for domestic use, of which the inhabitants stood in great need, and of which there is now an ample supply: Sheriff small debt courts are held four times a year. Fraserburgh is in a thriving condition at once , as a centre of the herring fishery. a seaport and as a seat of considerable provincial trade |

"The Episcopal Church is dedicated to St. Peter. It is built in the form of of a cruciform shape, and intended to be in the Norman Style of architecture.
The doorway is in the south transept, having a window over it, and the gable surmounted by a Campanile of fair design, but as a whole the building, neither in its external appearance, nor in its internal arrangement, is such as to satisfy the ecclesiologist. The chancel window is copied from one in York Minster, and is the redeeming feature in the church. The church contains an organ of great excellence by Nile of London."

A south pier was erected of the same length as that on the north and since that time viz. 1830, a middle pier broader than and in many respects superior to either of the other two, has been erected, inside of which vessels lie in perfect safety. The area thus enclosed as a harbour is upwards of 6 Scotch acres and is of easy access having about 6 feet of water at the piers head at low tide and 20 feet at Spring tide."

" The total wreck of the Danish fleet is an historical fact, which, I believe is sufficiently Authenticated: at all events the memory of it is preserved by tradition in the neighbourhood where it happened. The remarkable circumstance of the dream was frequently related by the late Bishop Jolly, who received it from the communication of the late Hon. [Honourable] Miss Anne Fraser of the Brick Lodge, who was born in 1719 and died at Fraserburgh in 1807, and as a little girl was an inmate of the Castle when the event happened." "Copied from a M.S. "Philorth House is in no way architecturally remarkable. The building is irregular and of various dates. Part of it is said to be very ancient; but after several efforts to obtain information respecting it, we are compelled to pass it over with this slight notice that 1666 is incised on one of the walls between two towers; and it is possible that these figures indicate the date of this particular part of the building."
