038 At a distance of about a mile & a half from the village of Ellon, on the oldmeldrum road, stands the noble and picturesque ruin of the old Castle of Esslemont, surrounded by a small plantation. Viewing this ruin of massive masonry from a short distance, one would be inclined to imagine it to be an old Church, or some sacred edifice, but on closer inspection it turns out to be the ruins of a magnificent feudal fortress. The people in the district know little or nothing about this ruin, and I cant get any authentic information as to the date of its erection, or when it ceased to be inhabited.
