Statistical Account of Aberdeenshire. Occupier
Charles Fraser Esq. Williamston
A.M.Gordon Esq. Newton.
Revd. [Reverend] Mr Masson. Manse. |
035 ; 064 |
The Parish of Culsamond is situated about 28 Miles North of the City of Aberdeen, in Aberdeenshire, it is irregular in shape and covers an area of about 7,000 Acres. There are five proprietors in this parish, and the grounds are attached to the estates of Newton, Tillymorgan, Williamston, Sheelagreen and Freefield. There are only two Mansion Houses in the parish, viz. Newton House the seat of the Gordon family, and Williamston House, the residence & property of Charles Fraser Esq. and what was formerly the Mansion House of Sheelagreen, is now converted into office houses on the farm of Mains of Sheelagreen. This parish on the whole presents a level appearance, there being only two hills in the parish of any hight or appearance, viz. The Hill of Tillymorgan and the Hill of Scares, the former is covered on the top with large Slate Quarries, and the south side is covered with Fir, the latter is nearly all planted with fir, with a few Slate Quarries on the top, this hill forms the only extensive plantation in the parish excepting, the plantings enclosing the Demesnes of Williamston and Newton. There is only one stream in the parish deserving the name of a River, it is called the Glen Water untill it reaches a place called Gardensmill Haugh, and then it is Known by the name of River Ury, it rises in the Glens of Foudland in the parish of Insch.
There are 4 places of worship in the parish, viz. the parish Church which is situ on the South Side of the hill of Tillymorgan, the Free Church which is situated a little South of the parish Church. The Congregational Chapel which is situated about one |

one mile east of the Free Church, and the Episcopal Chapel which is situated at Fisher Ford. There are three Schools viz the Parish School, the Free Church School and the Episcopal Chapel School. The only antiquities of note are the Standing Stones of Newton, two large Sculptured stones standing in front of the Laundry at Newton House, a few cairns in the vicinity of Cairn Hill and a large cairn called Mummer's Rieve, this is all the antiquities of note, still remaining in the parish. There was formerly an ancient British Camp on the Hill of Tillymorgan it is now drained and all traces of it are removed, and the Roman Road also passed through this parish, but all traces of it are also obliterated. The traces of Military works, Lines of intrenchments etc. on the north west side of the hill of Tillymorgan for the protection of the Ancient British Camp appear to have only existed in the imagination of the writer of the Statistical Account. As the oldest inhabitant (Some of whom were born and has always lived at the place where the Works are supposed to have existed.) never heard of any such things. The only Market of note held, is St Sairs but this is fast declining, from one of the largest markets in the North of Scotland, to a mere Horse Market, owing to the opening up of the country by Railways which carry the produce of the country to all the large Towns in Scotland.
Note. There is no portion of this parish detached nor portion, or portions, of any other parish enclosed within the boundary of this parish. |

Mr Mearns says that in the year 1860, he removed the stones from this cairn and came upon something like a stone Cist, which was filled with red and white ashes, he also found two stones thus [sketch] about 18 inches long and about 12 inches wide, being hollow in the centre. The stones do not belong to this part of the country, as one of them is Freestone & the other Ironstone. The hollow in the centre of the Stones appear to have been made by sharpening a Spade or Shovel on it. |

Mr Buchan the ground officer for estate of Tillymorgan, says, that when taking in this part of the Hill he removed the remains of what he supposes to have been a Brittish Camp. he says the Bank & Ditch was quite perfect, and had every appearance of being a Camp. This camp is mentioned in the Statistical Account of Aberdeenshire.
" On the north side of the hill of Culsalmond are the remains of a British encampment, protected on the north west side of the hill by double lines of entrenchment still very distinct. These lines are in the immediate neighbourhood of a farm town named Cadden, which name signifies warlike entrenchments or a place where soldiers had been stationed to watch the motions of An invading enemy. There are also still distinct traces of military works on the west bank of the Glen water opposite to Cadden. Lines of entrenchment are also still visible on the east side of the hill and Camp to protect it on that quarter. ( Statistical Account)
Note. Every effort was made to trace out and have inserted on the Plans the lines of entrenchment mentioned in this extract as having existed on the north side of the hill of Culsalmond and on the west bank of the Glen Water opposite to Cadden, but without success. |

This is the name of a very large Cairn of Stones which is situated in the south side of Pulwhite Wood. The origin of this name is not Known, but, the Revd [Reverend] Mr Masson thinks it was the place where the Mummers, in olden times used to preach to the people. There appears to have been a custom in this country of electing a Sham Bishop once a year, on a certain day and this Bishop as he was called, had to seat himself on this Bass, and go through the Service of the Church, which he mummerd over to the gratification of the people. This may be the origin of the name, but, it has every appearance of being a burial Cairn. The Sham Bishop who used to be elected was called the Mummer. |

Stone Circle.
A Druidical place of worship anciently stood on the spot which is now the Church yard or burying ground, and about the middle of it. It consisted of a Circle of twelve upright large granite stones from Benochee which were overturned when the first Christian temple was erected. One of these stones was taken out of the ground in 1821, And now remains above ground, near the spot from which it was dug up. The other eleven are still under ground. This is a proof that the first Christian missionaries in this country erected their places of worship as near as possible to the holy hills of the heathens, that the people might be more easily persuaded to assemble there. In digging out the foundation stones of an Ancient but small building to which the last Kirk*
*Kirk of Culsalmond had been attached, there were found below them , side by side, and at right Angles with the wall, the Skeletons of two men in perfect preservation. This happened in the Year 1821 when the new Kirk yard dikes were building. ( Statistical Account P. [Page] 737) |

Ancient Pillar stones of Scotland by George Moore, M.D. [Doctor of Medicine] |
044 |
Two large stones standing in front of the Laundry at Newton, One has a lot of *Hebrew Letters on it, and the other the figure of a snake cut on it. The one with the letters on it is called the Newton Stone and the other is called the Stone with the Newton Stone. This inscribed Pillar, as well as the Monument in Plate XXXVII [37], is now erected near to the House of Newton, the residence of Alexander Gordon Esq. in the parish of Culsalmond, in the District of Garioch, Aberdeenshire; but they were both removed from earlier, and, probably, original sites. The former stood on a spot surrounded by wood, close to the present tollgate of Shevak, about a mile south of the house of Newton, and has been removed from this site within the last twenty years. From Its proximity to the Inn and the Farm of Pitmachie it has occasionally been called the Pitmachie Stone. When the ground on which it stood was in the course of being trenched, several graves were described to me as having been made in the hard gravel, without any appearance of flagstones at the sides or elsewhere. The other stone is said to have been placed on the march between the Lands of Rothney and Newton, about half a mile westward from the inscribed pillar, but was removed to the House of Newton upwards of sixty years ago.
