035 ; 064 The Parish of Culsamond is situated about 28 Miles North of the City of Aberdeen, in Aberdeenshire, it is irregular in shape and covers an area of about 7,000 Acres. There are five proprietors in this parish, and the grounds are attached to the estates of Newton, Tillymorgan, Williamston, Sheelagreen and Freefield. There are only two Mansion Houses in the parish, viz. Newton House the seat of the Gordon family, and Williamston House, the residence & property of Charles Fraser Esq. and what was formerly the Mansion House of Sheelagreen, is now converted into office houses on the farm of Mains of Sheelagreen. This parish on the whole presents a level appearance, there being only two hills in the parish of any hight or appearance, viz. The Hill of Tillymorgan and the Hill of Scares, the former is covered on the top with large Slate Quarries, and the south side is covered with Fir, the latter is nearly all planted with fir, with a few Slate Quarries on the top, this hill forms the only extensive plantation in the parish excepting, the plantings enclosing the Demesnes of Williamston and Newton. There is only one stream in the parish deserving the name of a River, it is called the Glen Water untill it reaches a place called Gardensmill Haugh, and then it is Known by the name of River Ury, it rises in the Glens of Foudland in the parish of Insch.
There are 4 places of worship in the parish, viz. the parish Church which is situ on the South Side of the hill of Tillymorgan, the Free Church which is situated a little South of the parish Church. The Congregational Chapel which is situated about one
