"This river takes it's rise from Loch Muick, & runs through a considerable part of Glenmuick, in a direction from south-west to north-east. Its length is about 10 miles & it falls into the Dee at the manse. About the middle of its course, there is a cascade called the Linn of Muick, where the water falls 36 feet over a perpendicular rock & in times of floods makes a thundering deafening noise & dashes its spray in every direction above & around it." A very extensive and handsome building, built by the late Prince Consort. It consists of two quadrangular buildings connected with each other by two passages and lying north and south of each other. The Queen and suite when residing at the castle occupy the south square of buildings and the servants the north square. The highest point of the Castle is a magnificent clock tower surmounted by a flagstaff which bears a flag during the royal visit. Immediately on the west of the servants' square there is a beautiful ball room on the west wall of which there is a fine bass-relief statue of the late Prince consort watching some highlanders putting the stone. There are two bronze stags and a bronze boar on the west side of the royal apartments. The stables and other offices are apart from the dwellings a short distance. There is a telegraph office in connexion with the establishment. Invergelder is the home farm connected with the castle. The castle and office houses are in an excellent state of preservation and the whole are encompassed by a small but beautiful demesne. Property of Queen Victoria. |

This is the ruins of an old church situated in a grave yard which is still used as a place of internment by the parishoners. All inquiries which it is usual to make about such objects as this church, have been made but without throwing any light on its early history. By Mr Anderson it is considered that it was at one time used as a place of worship by the Roman Catholics. All that now remains of it are the four upright walls without a roof. |

"On the lands of Monaltry, on the north bank of the River Dee, in a narrow pass, where there is not above 60 yards of level ground from the river to the foot of a steep, rocky hill, stands a cairn Known by the name of Carn na Cuimhne, or the 'Cairn of Remembrance'. ** The tradition of the country is, that, many ages ago, the country being in danger, the Highland chiefs raised their men, and marching through the pass, caused each man to lay down stone in this place. When they returned the stones were numbered; by which simple means it was Known how many men were brought into the field and what number had been lost in action. Carn na Cuimhne is the the watchword of the country." Fullarton's Gazetteer, Vol. [Volume] 1, page 163. The cairn is surmounted by a flagstaff. |

This castle is very ancient, once the residence of the [Muat] family, until the beginning of the fifteenth century, when a feud arose between the Camerons of Brux and the [Muats] of Abergeldie. The parties met on a hill on the Southern verge of the Don. Called, Drum. Guardrum on the lands of Brux. Cameron had only twelve men, but the treacherous Muat threw two men on each horse; not withstanding the disparity of numbers, the parties engaged with keenness. The two sons of Muat and a gentleman called McFadden, and eleven of Muat's men fell, and were all interred in the heath with Cameron, which ended the line of Brux. He leaving no issue to deplore his loss, but one daughter in her minority, her he intrusted under the Earl of Mar, before he engaged Muat. Catherine Cameron, having attained the age of puberty, was surrounded by admirers; but learning the cause of the father's death, vowed to give her hand to none, but that man who dared reveng the death of her father, which made them fall back. Lord John Forbes of Castle Forbes, had four sons, who sued for the hand of Catherine, but retired on hearing her vow. Robert the second son returning to the pursuit, determined to gain the horse or lose the saddle, to gain her hand, or embark with Cameron. Accordingly, he challenged Muat to meet him on the field of Badenyon, May the 8th. Each leader commanded six hundred men to prevent treachery, when Forbes addressed Muat to this effect: What pitty to dip so many swords in human blood. We will encounter arm to arm, and the soldiers will live in friendship with the victor to which Muat assented with an oath, on an instant they engaged with resolution, and stood firm for some minutes, when Muat resigned his life into the shades. Forbes returned to Kildrumy, and led the blooming virgin to the altar, and fixed their seat at Brux, and from them descends a numerous progeny.

"In 1487 Alexander Gordon of Midmar, was presented with the lands of Abergeldie, and was one of the witnesses, that took oath on on the plate, in the church of St Nicholas at Aberdeen at the Reformation in January 17th (1560) 1550." About fifty years ago whilst some workmen were repairing one of the floors they came upon a stone coffin, containing human bones, hair, and the sole of a boot, How, or under what circumstances it was placed there, has not yet been found out. The present building is situated on the South bank of the Dee, about six miles above Ballater, and consists of a square tower, of ancient date, and some recently erected buildings; the whole is in excellent condition. The above partly copied from The Caledonia Itinerary, or a [Tour] on the banks of the Dee, by A. Laing, Aberdeen 1819. |
