A Considerable river which has its source at the east end of Benavon. Its whole length is about 20 miles. It flows in a direction north-west to south-east through a rocky and precipitous channel till it falls into the River Dee about a mile west from the Village of Ballater.

079 [Situation] In the Ph. [Parish] of Glenmuick Tullich and Glengairn.
This name applies to the glen through which the Gairn flows. It extends from the Farm of Reinathon above Gairnsheil to the bridge crossing the Gairn on the Turnpike Road leading from Ballater to Braemar. The land on both sides of the river is cultivated for a considerable distance and produces very good Crops. The principal proprietor in the Glen is Col. [Colonel] Farquharson of Invercauld.
