Mr Gordon, Gordonstown Fullarton's Gazeteer Johnston's County Map Statistical Account Macfarlane's Collections of the Shires 043 ; 052 The Parish of Clatt is situated in the Western part of Aberdeenshire and is bounded on the North by Kennethmont Parish on the east by Leslie, west by Auchindoir and Rhynie and on the South by Tullynessle and Forbes Parishes. It is about four miles in length by about three in breadth, and is in the presbytery of Alford and Synod of Aberdeen. More than three fourths of the soil of the Parish is occupied by crops and the remaining portion (i.e. the southern) affords good Mountain pasture for Cattle and sheep. The greatest elevations in the Parish are the Correen and White Hills. In the former Serpentine and granite occur; also a sort of mica slate with occasional green-stone is to be found. The remains of the Town of Clatt is situated nearly in the centre of the Parish and was, about thirty years ago an active little place. The inhabitants thereof at that period being chiefly employed in handloom cotton. There is no portion of this Parish detached, nor portion, or portions of any other parish, enclosed within the boundary of this parish. [continued on page 2]

It is situated about ten miles South of Huntly, and was erected into a burgh of Barony by James IV in 1501. The site of the Cross can still be pointed out. This Parish appears to have been a favorite resort of the Druids, as no less than the sites of five Druidical Temples have been discovered, as also the sites of two paved roads or Causeways leading from the Temples to the Cemeteries of the Druids. The altar stone twelve feet in length four in breadth and four feet in thickness, now forms portion of a Stone wall. On this Stone the priests' offered up to their God Thautes, or Theautes sacrifices consisting of Bipeds and Quadrupeds at the celebration of their New Year. "As they held that the life of man, either in danger of death by war, or severe sickness, could not be secured, unless another suffered in his stead; therefore, on such, and on many other occasions, the Bipeds' or Human Sacrifices were offered, which they thought would be highly acceptable to Theautes, for this end their selected victims, were murderers, thieves, robbers and other malefactors, but for want of those; innocent victims composed the oblation. After an oration to Hesus, they formed a man of wicker twigs wove in the manner of a basket, which they filled with their victims and after a solemn hymn, it was set on fire, and thus, the objects ended their life in the devouring element." The popular North Country ballad "The Gady Rins," derives its name from this stream. A good County road leading from Inverness to Edinburgh, passes through the Parish. There is an arched figure somewhat resembling a horseshoe cut on it There is said to have been the figure of a fish surmounting the arch at one time, but that has been removed probably while cutting the stone for its present use, there are however still left two small figures which might be taken for the belly fins of a fish. This stone, "having a horse-shoe figure incised on it's surface, was dug up from a depth of about 6 feet in the vicinity of a number of Cairns, which seem to have abounded in the neighbourhood, & to have been connected with a remarkable Circle of Stones viz. a paved Road. It has been used for building purposes, & in this way the fish which surmounted the arch has been mostly destroyed". Sculptural Stones of Scotland Spalding Club Edition 1856, Page 5. [Signed] EH. [E.H. Courtney]) and a line through the centre parts of other three circles (this figure is the "fibula", an ornament which is very rarely found indeed. It is a Burgh of Barony and was, as the Charter shews, created and granted by King James IVth 16th June 1501 in the 14th year of his reign, and "published with weeklie mercats and yeirlie fairs and other privilidges to our lovitt James Gordon of Knockaspoke" by James VI of Scotland and I of England 17th Decr [December] 1613 in the 47th year of his reign over Scotland and 11th of his reign over England. Until recently there was a weekly market held and a yearly fair called St Molloch's Fair. Below the manse there are several ruins which a few years ago were the dwellings & shops of a number of hand loom weavers. When viewed from a distance in any direction round about the Kirktown is entirely hidden by the foliage of a number of large forest trees of the growth of 100 or 130 years, the Gaudie Burn flows through the Village, the Kirktown is the property of Sir Henry Percy Gordon Baronet of Knockespock.

OS1/1/14/23 Site of STONE CIRCLE [Kirktown of Clatt] (Site of) Stone Circle (Site of) Stone Circle (Site of) Stone Circle Mr Booth Hillhead Mr Gordon Gordonstown Revd [Reverend] John Minto 043 Mr Booth states that while engaged along with a number of workmen in trenching and reclaiming the land they came upon a Circle (at the place indicated on the trace) about 40 feet in diameter beautifully paved with large stones, there was also a Causeway paved in the same manner leading in an easterly direction, about 20 feet of it only was visible at that time (20 years ago) but Mr Booth is of opinion that it had extended at one time as far as 200 yards Southeast of the Circle to a number of Tumuli which he also removed when improving the land. There were never any upright Stones standing on this Circle during the memory of Mr Booth, who is the oldest inhabitant of the parish that knows anything about these antiquities.

Mr Booth of Hillhead is of opinion that the Tumuli had connection with a Stone Circle that existed in the locality and which was removed about the same time. The stones composing the Tumuli were used in fencing the reclaimed land, and many of them have the appearance of Stones usually found about Stone Circles.

OS1/1/14/25 Site of CAUSEWAY [nr Gartnach Hill] Supposed Site of Causeway Supposed Site of Causeway Supposed Site of Causeway Mr Booth Hillhead Mr Gordon Gordonstown Revd [Reverend] John Minto Schoolmaster 043 This is supposed to be the site of a paved way or Causeway, which led from a Stone Circle to a number of Tumuli about 200 yards east from it. About 20 years ago while workmen were engaged clearing away the Stone Circle they Came upon about 20 feet of the Causeway which led in a South Easterly direction, it was composed of large uncut stones beautifully fitted together. So nicely fitted were they, that the workmen had great difficulty in getting their picks wedged in to separate them. There can be no doubt that this was the causeway (or avenue) leading to the Circle. Many such causeways have been found in other parts of Great Britain, connected with Stone Circles. [Signed] E.H. OS1/1/14/27 Supposed ALTAR STONE [Persylieu] Supposed Altar Stone Supposed Altar Stone Supposed Altar Stone Mr Booth Mr MacPherson Revd [Reverend] J Minto Schoolmaster 043 This is a very large flat stone built into the wall on the south side of the Site of Stone Circle, it measures 12 feet long by 4 feet broad, and is 4 feet thick. it has evidently been much broader, as the marks of drill holes Can be seen where it had been Cut. It is supposed to have been the Altar of the Stone Circle close by, but when it was removed to its present position cannot be ascertained. Mr Booth who is the oldest inhabitant of the Parish interested in such things does not remember seeing it in any other position. "There appears, from a thousand remains, both in South, and North Britain to have been two kinds of Druid Altars, the first such consists of flat stones, which are either recumbent, or upright." "The altar stones are connected with Druid Circles, and have sometimes artificial cavities in them."- "There are flat altar stones, at many other Druid Circles in North Britain, such as, at Coupar Grange, in Perthshire, Kiltearn, in Ross-shire and other places."- "Many of the Druid Circles, in England, and Wales, have similar altar stones, and upright stones with cavities in them."- (Chalmers' Caledonia Vol. [Volume] 1. P. [Page] 73-4.)

A very small portion only of this Causeway was visible when the workmen were engaged in clearing away the Stone Circle, but Mr Booth is of opinion from the nature of the Ground that it led out in a North Easterly direction to the extent marked on the plan.

This urn was discovered about 2½ feet from the surface. It contained a quantity of burnt bones, and also an oval shaped cup, resembling a sugar basin, four inches in diameter and one and a half in depth. Unfortunately this cup was also broken; but it appears to have been made of different clay from the urn. Near to where the Urn was found Mr. Gordon also came upon several deposits of calcined bones, & in one place these had been covered with flat stones.

Mr Gordon, Farmer, Gordonstown Mr Smith, Farmer, Dykenook. Caledonian Itinerary 043 A battle was fought here in the year 1572. between the Gordons' and Forbes's. "The Gordon and Forbes clan at this period had the supreme power and authority in the north of Scotland. The two families lived in secret emulation, and were hushed by an intermarriage, but unhappily not of long duration. John Forbes, Viscount of Druminnor repudiated his wife, Margaret Gordon, daughter to George Earl of Huntly, instigated by Black Arthur (Lord Arthur Forbes), who mortally hated the whole of the Gordons thus discontent and divorces prevailed until the old rancorous flame burst forth afresh. Sir Adam Gordon when he heard of this coalition marched with a few chosen friends to Tillyangus, fully resolved to thwart the Forbes'. Laing says in his Itinerary. The Forbes' perceiving the approach of the Gordons, fortified and intrenched their camp, and then divided their army in two divisions. The right wing lying nearest to the Gordons' was commanded by that noble hero Black Arthur. Adam Gordon having but a handful of men, attacked the first division, while his brother Robert engaged the second, broke their Entrenchment and plied them briskly with the spear. Black Arthur & many of the Forbes' fell. On seeing him fall the Army fled, and were pursued by the Gordons' to the Castle of Druminnor. In this engagement John Gordon of Buckie fell and a few others." (Laing's Itinerary Pages 94. & 95.) R. Dickson Sapper RE [Royal Engineers] [Continued on page 49]

OS1/1/14/49 Site of ENGAGEMENT between the Clans Forbes and Gordon A.D. 1572 043 [Continued from page 47] "Feudal Rencontre. - The only historical incident in this parish deserving of notice, was a rencontre in 1572, between the two rival clans of Forbes and Gordon. To revenge an insult offered by the Master of Forbes, in repudiating his wife, daughter of the Earl of Huntly, the Gordons, under the command of two of the Earl's brothers, attacked their hereditary enemies, the Forbesses, within their rude entrenchment, on the White Hill of Tillyangus, in the South-west extremity of this parish, and, after a sanguinary contest, still marked by a number of graves or cairns, the Gordons carried the encampment of their opponents, slew Arthur Forbes, Son of Lord Forbes, commonly called Black Arthur, from his dark complexion, and continued the pursuit to the gates of Castle Forbes, (now Druminnor), the family Seat of the numerous Clan Forbes. This skirmish is the subject of traditionary notice by the aged chroniclers of the parish, and is recorded in a manuscript memoir of the house of Forbes, now in possession of the Honourable Lord Forbes."- (New Stat. Revd [Reverend] John Minto, Clatt. 025 The remains of this Druidical place of worship is on the summit of White Hill, and appears to have been a very large circle, but a great quantity of the stones have been taken away from time to time for building purposes. Some people think that this is the remains of a Fortified Camp, built by the Clan Forbes, when they fought against the Gordons' at Tillyangus in 1572: but it is generally believed that a Druid Circle had existed here, long before these two clans had any existence. No doubt the Forbes' simply added more stones to the already made fortification when they fortified themselves here in 1572.
