Site of STONE CIRCLE [Kirktown of Clatt] | (Site of) Stone Circle (Site of) Stone Circle (Site of) Stone Circle |
Mr Booth Hillhead Mr Gordon Gordonstown Revd [Reverend] John Minto |
043 | Mr Booth states that while engaged along with a number of workmen in trenching and reclaiming the land they came upon a Circle (at the place indicated on the trace) about 40 feet in diameter beautifully paved with large stones, there was also a Causeway paved in the same manner leading in an easterly direction, about 20 feet of it only was visible at that time (20 years ago) but Mr Booth is of opinion that it had extended at one time as far as 200 yards Southeast of the Circle to a number of Tumuli which he also removed when improving the land. There were never any upright Stones standing on this Circle during the memory of Mr Booth, who is the oldest inhabitant of the parish that knows anything about these antiquities. |
