A large parish in Aberdeenshire, bounded on the north by the parishes of Daviot and Rayne, on the west by Oyne, on the south by Monymusk and Kemnay, and on the east by Inverurie, Keith Hall and Daviot. Its length from north to south is about 9 miles, and its greatest breadth about 5 though at one place it measures little more than a mile. With the exception of a small portion of Bennochie, this parish is very well cultivated and possesses four gentlemen's seats, viz- Fetternear, Pitcaple, Logie Elphinstone, and Pittodrie. Round the mansion houses the country is pretty extensively wooded. The villages in the parish are, Durno, at which there is a branch of the north of Scotland Bank, Pitcaple, containing the post Office and an Inn, and Chapel, where the Established Church and Manse are situated. It has at present three churches, the Established Church, in connection with which there is a Chapel of Ease at Blairdaff in the south of the parish, and the Free Church near the railway Station. The ruins or site of three ancient chapels are still known, viz- St Ninian's, at Fetternear, St Mary's, in the graveyard near the present church, and one at Braco. The principal antiquities are the Castle of Balquhain and a Druidical Circle close to it. The four mansionhouses also rank as antiquities though still inhabited. It is intersected by the Great North of Scotland Railway by which the means of communication is frequent and uniform.
No part of this parish is detached nor does it contain portions of any other parish within its boundaries. |

The ruins of this church are in some places about three feet high and in other almost level, with trees growing all round the wall. The date of erection is unknown, but as parish Church of Logie Durno, it became disused when, in the beginning of the 17th century, this parish was united to that of Chapel of Garioch. When united the present parish church at the Chapel of Garioch was built? |

This wood is the site of the small Roman Camp that formerly stood here: the name "Castle" wood was probably given to it from the Latin word "Castrum" signifying "Camp" from this word also probably the tradition of a "Castle" having stood here, was derived. - [signed] E.H.Courtney, Capt. ROMAN CAMP
(Remains of)
[signed initials] EHC [Edward Henry Courtney]
This object is evidently the Roman camp mentioned in Statistical Account etc.-
It is believed by some Archeoelogist; who inspected it some 40 years ago, to
have been merely intended to accommodate a small garrison for the purpose
of keeping open the communications between the Camp at Peterculter on the
River Dee, & the Camp at Glenmeilan in Auchterless Parish. As I can find
no traces, beyond those inserted on the Plan, I have no doubt that such must
have been the case.

(Supposed) Roman Road |
Mr James Taylor. Gamekeeper Pitcaple Castle. |
045 ; 054 |
The track of an old road through the grounds of Pitcaple Castle, southwards, can easily be traced, and can be followed through the woods either intact or in detached pieces as far as Gallow Hill where all trace of it is lost. Wherever arable fields intervene the track is totally obliterated and whether it ever has been a Roman Road is conjectural, though it does run northward in direction of the site of the Roman Post. An old inhabiant of Pitcaple, from boyhood a servant to the previous proprietors of the castle, was known to have stated that the northern portion of the two branches of road shown on the plan was a portion of the Roman Road. Nothing more can be gleaned respecting it. |

" The castle of Pitcaple, which is situated on the South bank of Ury, is also an ancient building but a considerable addition was recently made to it, There are various historical traditions connected with the old castle, Some of which may be mentioned, In the month of July 1650 King Charles 2nd having sailed from Holland, landed at Garmouth upon the Spey, from where he proceeded to rest at the Bog of Gight, now Gordon Castle when Charles crossed the Ury, near the Castle of Pitcaple, he is said to have been Struck with the luxuriancy of the crop, observing that it reminded him of dear England. The farm to which this remark was applied has ever since been called England, and is still known by this name. On the occasion of the Royal Visit, a ball took place here, and the party danced under the Thorn tree which still stands on the lawn, and which is said to be one of the largest Thorn trees in Great Britain" Extract from Statistical Account of Aberdeenshire , Page 564. No definate information can be gathered about this place, but it is generally supposed that a Chapel of this name existed at this place.
The foundations of a building, said to be a Roman Catholic Chapel, with a well close by, occasionally attracted notice a few years ago on the estate of Lethenty. The well is still visible: but no vestige of the building now exists. Statistical Account Page 822. |

There is still remaining a considerable portion of the ruins of Lethenty Castle, one portion is converted into a stable, and another into a dwelling house. I cant get any authentic information in connection with this Castle, from any of the people in the district. Mrs Innes, the Tenant of the farm, and who is a cousin of the proprietor, says, that the castle has not been occupied for the last 50 years, though it was once the family residence of the Skene family, the property at present belongs to Capt. [Captain] William Abraham Skene. his present residence is unknown. There is a stone at the Castle marked EVS,1622. and at the farmsteading of Hillhead there are two stones, each marked 1602, these stones were taken from the old castle some years ago, and are built into the wall of the stables. |

"About half a mile to the north west of the church, is to be seen a large stone, called the Maiden Stone, which is ten feet high above the ground, two feet and ten inches broad, and about ten inches thick. It is supposed about six feet below the surface of the ground. Upon it there are several curious hieroglyphical figures cut.
The occassion of its erection is unknown: but there is a tradition that there existed a fewd betwixt the Laird of Balquhain, and the neighbouring proprietor of Harthill, which was carried to such a hight that they had no intercourse with each other. Notwithstanding of this it is reported that the daughter of the former and the son of the latter became attached to each*

*each other. Upon an appointed day, the young people set off together
when their flight being immediately communicated to the Laird of
Balquhain, he pursued them, a rencontre took place in which the young
lady was unfortunately killed. Afterwards this stone was erected
to her memory, and from hence called the Maiden Stone.
It might also have had some connection with the Maiden Causeway
on the hill of Benochie." (Statistical Account.
Another tradition, equally absurd is connected with a Maiden, who on her bridal day and engaged in baking bread, was
inveigled into a wager with a stranger, that she would bake a firlot of meal before he would make a road from
the bottom to the top of Ben-a-chie, or if she failed, she would become his own. Ere her last bannock was ready, the
road was made: on seeing which she fled to the wood of Pittodrie, pursued by the stranger, who was the Devil. He
was in the act of reiping her when she was turned into the Maiden Stone, and the part of it which has been broken
out of one of the sides, disappeared in the grasp of the Demon.-
The word "Maiden" frequently occurs in the Topography of Scotland, and it's etymology has been discussed in
the Name Book of "Oyne" Parish, quod vide. -
This stone is a hard granite but of a coarse grain, and the figures through exposure, are in some parts very indistinct.
The 3 animals above the Centaur at the top can only be seen in a particular light. A trench was lately made
round the stone, but no Sepulchural remains were found, and it was subsequently discovered that the Stone had probably
been removed a few paces westward from its first site, when the adjoining road was made. This Stone was then found
as has been found in the case of many other similar pillars, to extend only a few feet into the soil, and that it was not placed in a
base of stone.

The remains of an ancient Chapel situated in the graveyard near the parish church of Chapel of Garioch. The following is its history given by Mr Selbie, teacher. "A residence of the Leslies of Balquhain was at Tullos about two miles south from where the parish church now stands. A member of the family died suddenly without the last offices of a priest. The survivors then built and dedicated to the Virgin Mary the Chapel called it St Mary's, to which every morning at 8 o'clock, summer and winter, they repaired and offered up prayers for the soul of the departed. By and bye it became to be called the Chapel of the Garioch and was used as a regular and public place of worship, though at first it was built for the purpose of special intercession for the soul of one individual. Then when the site of the parish church was removed from Old Logie, it became, about the beginning of the 17th Century, the parish church and the parish was then called "the Chapel of Garioch," and no longer "Logie Durno." The site of it is in the churchyard, a little to the south of the present church."
I conjecture the chapel originates in pictish times. JMD |

On Wednesday last during some improvements on the hill of Newton of Balquhain, which are in process of being carried out, a cist was come upon. It was carefully opened, and in it was found an Urn in a complete state of preservation, beautifully shaped and tastefully carved. It contained ashes, a flint of an oval shape flattened, its two axes being about the length of an egg. There was also a small pin of iron with a small ring at one end. |

In it Queen Mary spent a day in her journey to the north, which terminated in the battle of Corrichie. This castle is of so great antiquity that there is no tradition of its erection, but it is said to have been burnt to the ground by the Duke of Cumberland in the year 1746.
Of the venerable castle, the remains of the court, and the square tower or keep is all that now remains. The walls are six feet thick and the cement almost as hard as the stone. From it there is one of the finest echoes in Scotland."

"Upon the 24th July 1411, on St James Even, the memorable and bloody battle of Harlaw was fought in this parish, between Alexander, Earl of Mar, who commanded the Royal Army, and Donald, Lord of the Isles. The field upon which it is said the battle was fought, is about a quarter of a mile to the southeast of the farm of Harlaw." Extract from Statistical Account of Aberdeenshire, Page 569, 70.
"The site of the battle is thus described in the Manuscript Geographical Description of Scotland collected by Macfarlane, and preserved in the Advocates' Library [Vol.1. page 7]
'Through this parish ( the Chapel of Garioch, formerly called Capella Beatae Mariae Virginis de Garryoch) runs the King's highway from Aberdeen to Inverness. and from Aberdeen to the high country. A large mile to the east of the church lies the field of an ancient battle, called the battle of Harlaw, from a country town of that name hard by. This town and the field of battle which lies along the King's highway upon a moor, extending a short mile from southeast to northwest, stands on the northeast side of the water of Urie and a small distance." Extract from Notes appended to Thom's Poems.

"Upon the 24th of July 1411, on St James's Even, the memorable and bloody battle of Harlaw was fought in this parish between Alexander, Earl of Mar, who commanded the Royal Army, and Donald, Lord of the Isles.
There is a tradition in the family of Irvine of Drum that the Laird of Maclean was slain by Sir Alexander Irvine. Irvine was buried in the field, where in ancient times a cairn marked the place of his interment, which was long known by the name of Drum's Cairn."

These ruins are situate close to the farm of Tullos, it was originally a Mansion House of a small estate. It is not a home Sixty of Seventy Years since it was inhabited.
By the County people it is called Tullos Castle, but its claims to being called a Castle are very poor were it not for the fact that a stone bearing the date of 1651 was taken from it one would be lead to beleive that it was quite modern, and only unroofed to give the material for some other building, Its square windows, and broad chimneys, show that if it was a castle, it was ill fitted for defensive purposes. |

A large and substantial Mansion house situated in the southern end of the parish. Little information can be obtained respecting the date of its erection; it is shortly mentioned in the Statistical Account as having been "once the residence of the Bishop of Aberdeen." There are two towers in the front of the building one of which is called Wallace's Tower " Fetterneir, once a summer seat of the bishops of Aberdeen. Wallace is said to have slept there one night; hence part of it is called Wallace's Tower. At the Reformation this manor was given to the Lesley's of Balquhain for their assistance to the Earl of Huntly in protecting the Cathedral of Aberdeen from the fury of the Reformers." Extract from Notes to Thom's Poems, page 71.
Property and sometimes the residence of Col. [Colonel] C. Leslie. |
