036 ; 045 ; 054 ; 064 | A large parish in Aberdeenshire, bounded on the north by the parishes of Daviot and Rayne, on the west by Oyne, on the south by Monymusk and Kemnay, and on the east by Inverurie, Keith Hall and Daviot. Its length from north to south is about 9 miles, and its greatest breadth about 5 though at one place it measures little more than a mile. With the exception of a small portion of Bennochie, this parish is very well cultivated and possesses four gentlemen's seats, viz- Fetternear, Pitcaple, Logie Elphinstone, and Pittodrie. Round the mansion houses the country is pretty extensively wooded. The villages in the parish are, Durno, at which there is a branch of the north of Scotland Bank, Pitcaple, containing the post Office and an Inn, and Chapel, where the Established Church and Manse are situated. It has at present three churches, the Established Church, in connection with which there is a Chapel of Ease at Blairdaff in the south of the parish, and the Free Church near the railway Station. The ruins or site of three ancient chapels are still known, viz- St Ninian's, at Fetternear, St Mary's, in the graveyard near the present church, and one at Braco. The principal antiquities are the Castle of Balquhain and a Druidical Circle close to it. The four mansionhouses also rank as antiquities though still inhabited. It is intersected by the Great North of Scotland Railway by which the means of communication is frequent and uniform. No part of this parish is detached nor does it contain portions of any other parish within its boundaries. |
