| PARISH OF BOURTIE | Parish of Bourtie | Continued [from p.2] | dates on the walls. This ancient edifice is the property of John Ramsay Esquire, of Shaloch. Numerous Stone Cists, Urns, and flint Arrow heads have been discovered at various times throughout the Parish. The greatest elevations in the Parish are, Lawel Hill and Barra Hill, both of which are thickly covered with fir, with the exception of about three acres on the top of Barra Hill. From the summit of this Hill an extensive view is commanded of the low Country to the North east and west: but the Circumstance of greatest interest connected with it, is the remains of an ancient intrenched Camp or fort on the Summit locally known as Cumming's Camp, surrounded by a fosse, and within this are remains of three lines of Circumvallation around the top of the Hill. The upper which is of an elliptical form keeping along the edge of the slope encloses a space of about 3 Acres or thereabouts, measuring about six Chains in length by about five in breadth, artificially levelled; but without any foundations or other trace of included buildings. The walls appear to have been chiefly composed of small stones piled up cairnwise, slopping towards both sides, without any signs of masonry.
