" Balhelvie hath for its tutelar, Saint Colm. The Bishop of Aberdeen is the patron." (Col. on the S. of A. & Banff) [Collections on the Shires of Aberdeen & Banff]
"The name of the parish is said to signify in Gaelic the mouth of the rivulets, and, accordingly, there are seven small rivulets that rise within the bounds of the parish. This parish is nearly a right angled parallelogram, 6 miles long, by 5 miles broad, and contains 30 Square miles. The Church is 8 miles north of Aberdeen, the south extremity four miles and the north extremity 10 miles from Aberdeen. It is bounded on the South by the parish of Old Machar, on the west by New machar, on the north by Foveran, and on the East, by the German Ocean. There are a number of low hills in this parish, that surround two ridges from South to North, the hills themselves and the ground between them gradually rising as they depart from the sea. The western boundary of the parish is one continued ridge of high land, about 800 feet above the level of the Sea. The whole of the Sea Coast is a beach of fine sand, bounded by sand-hills, covered with [bent] . Next to that is a narrow stripe of land covered with a sweet & hard grass, kept always for pasture. This stripe is so level that the Engineers appointed by Government to measure Scotland" [Continued] |

Up to the year 1861 There stood at this place a very fine specimen of the ancient "Cromlech," or "Dolmen." The covering stone consisted of a huge block of blue granite, supposed to have been 27 Tons weight, this was supported
at the four Corners by large upright blocks of granite, which gave it the form of a huge table, which when struck by a heavy instrument emitted a sound like that of a distant Bell. The tradition in the locality is, that a battle was fought here, in which the King of the Picts fell, and was buried beneath this stone encased in Golden Armour. During the construction of the Formartine and Buchan Railway, the navvies hearing this tradition, Blasted the Covering Stone in the hope of gaining possession of the supposed treasure. Nothing was found beneath the Stone but a quantity of Black Unctuous Earth Surrounded by Clay. The fragments of the blasted stone are
yet to be seen at the place, a little to the South of the 9th milestone on the Aberdeen and Old Meldrum Turnpike road, on West side of said road near Westercraigie Croft. From the description I have obtained of this Stone, it appears to have been a very fine Specimen of the ancient monument known to antiquarians as the "Cromlech " or "Dolmen." B. Render Corp. R.E. "The parish Church is situated on the east side of the parish about one mile, from the sea, and nearly in the middle between its north and south extremities. The church is in good repair, and contains 519 sitting rooms, giving the legal measure to each." (New Stat Act P.247) [New Statistical Account]
"The East Wall of the present parochial church probably is part of the Wall of a Roman Catholic church (Ibid) "This was only a chappel before the Reformation, but then it was enlarged. It has an isle built by the Earl of Panmure, who possesses the greater part of the parish." (Collections on the shires of Aberdeen & Banff.) "This is a mistake, Balhelvy was a parsonage and, parish church from the earliest period of which we have record. [In A.D.1157 it is so mentioned in a Bull of Pope Adrian IV.]" (Note by Captain Courtney R.E. [Royal Engineers] ) |

Previous to the Reformation there was a "Chappel at Horsecrook". (Col. [Collection] on the Shires of Aberdeen & Banff)
"Meadowbank" was formerly called "Horsecrook". There are no remains of the Chapel to be seen. George Simpson, Shepherd, Meadowbank, states he has resided in the neighbourhood 50 years, and that the late Mr Reid told him that the Site marked was the graveyard of the Chapel. It is supposed by the authorities above quoted that the Chapel Stood in the grave yard and that the Site marked is as near as it is possible to ascertain. None of the old people in the district remember seeing any portion of the walls. The Revd [Reverend] William Thomson says that the Persons who demolished the old Chapels in this parish all came to grief and an untimely end. The man who destroyed the Chapel at Ardo Cut his throat, and the man who dug up the graves at Boggs was Smothered in a Sand Pit on the day the work of destroying the graves was completed, and the Lady at Meadowbank lost her eyesight. There were four places of worship in this parish when the Roman Catholic religion was the established religion of this country. All remains of two of them are gone. (New Stat Act. [Statistical Account].) Before the Reformation there was a Roman Catholic "Chappel at Boggs". (Collections on the Shires of Aberdeen & Banff) At one time a Farm House Called "Boggs" Stood near the Site of the Chapel, but it was taken down some years ago. There are no remains of the Chapel to be seen but the site is well known and the small Spring near it is well known as the "Chapel Well". There was a grave yard surrounding the Chapel which was dug up by a Tenant about 30 years ago, and the bones and rich Mould were put on the ground for Manure!! B. Render Corp. R.E. Cromlech (Page 7)
"There appear from a thousand remains, both in South and North Britain to have been
two kinds of Druid Altars: the first sort consists of flat stones which are either incumbent, or
upright, the second sort is the Cromlechs, consisting of a large broad Stone, which is supported by
several Stones, that are usually placed upon their respective edges. Of the first kind there are numerous
examples, in every district of North Britain, as we have seen. The Cromlechs are equally numerous,
and still more remarkable. And both these sorts of altars are generally connected with Druid Circles, or
other Druid works, though the Cromlechs sometimes appear alone, in some sequestered place, which
may have been sheltered by the sacred grove, while the Caledonian forest yet covered the Caledonian
regions."
"The term Cromlech is brought by Rowland, from Babel, in the form of Cæræm-lech or Cærem-luach, a devoted stone or
altar. (Mon. Antiq. P. 47) which is quoted by the learned author of the Munimenta. Antiq. V. [Volume] 1. P.230-58-59. This elaborate antiquary also quotes an Etymon of the Cromlech, which is supposed to have been given by a Scots highlander, in the Gent Mag. 1792. P. 695, and
which consists of Crom bent or crooked, and lech, that is supposed, by the highlander, to be a corruption of Clach, a stone, thus,
Cromlech was conjectured to be the stone, which was to be bowed towards, or the stone of adoration. Borlase P. 225, says
the general name for this stone among the learned, is Cromlech, or Crooked Stone; the upper stone being generally of a convex or swelling surface, and resting in a crooked position: Borlase adds in a note, that Crom, in the Cornish, signifies crooked, and Crymmy bending, bowing; whence Toland, and others, have conjectured, these singular erections were called Cromlech, from the reverence which persons, bowing
in the act of adoration, paid to them, None of these, however, have given the true, and proper, interpretation of the term Cromlech. Crom, both in the British and Irish, undoubtedly signifies bent, inclined; and Cromadh, bending, inclining; and Llech (Brit) and Leac (Irish)
mean a flat stone, as we learn from Davies and O'Brien: whence, Crom-lech literally signifies the inclined flat stone; and certainly
is, like most other Celtic names descriptive of the thing, to which it is applied; the top stone of all the Cromlechs being a flat stone,
that had been designedly placed in an inclined position. The conjecture of the Scots highlander of Toland, and of others as above
mentioned, of the Cromlech being the stone of adoration does not agree with the fact; as the Cromlechs were not constructed for objects of

"of adoration, but for the analogous purpose of Sacrificing altars. It must however be observed, that Crom is not the
proper epithet, either in the British, or in the Irish, for inclining, or Sloping, unless the stone was also concave; Crom,
literally signifies, in both those languages, bending, bowed, bent, concave, and might be applied to the attitude of the body,
in bowing. For drawings of Cromlechs, see Pennant's Tour in Wales, V. [Volume] ii. [2] P. [Page] 246; King's Munimentia Antiqua Pl [Plate] viii.ix.x.xi [8, 9,10, 11] p. 222.
Borlase's Cornwall P.[Page] 223. Pl [Plate] 21: Ure's Rutherglen P.[Page]85."- (Chalmer's Caledonia vol 1 P 74-75.)
In a conversation I had, some years ago, with Adam [Simm] Esq. Culter Mains, Lanarkhshire, an eminent antiquary,
who has made Druidism, and supposed Druidcal remains his especial study, he stated that from all the
research he had made, his opinion was that, the Cromlech was the Sepulchral Stone of some eminent person
connected with Druidism i.e. Archdruid or other Druid priest. The Druids were in Britain the first
and most distinguished order in the island, chosen out of the best families, and the honours of their birth,
added to their office, procured them the highest veneration, and it is very probable, that, the poor and ignorant
British, followers of Druidism, would look upon the Druid Priests as demigods, or Saints, and like the
followers of Romanism at the present day, bow, or pray at the Tomb of their Priest, or Saint. This supposition
will certainly bear out the supposed derivation of "Cromlech being The Stone of Adoration."
