These Ancient "Roads"so far as appears on the Plan are quite visible, terminating to the north at what appears to be small "Camps"or sheltering places: A little west of Knockhuise the Road breaks into two the Southern branch is shortly lost and the western one goes into Plan 11 and there shortly likewise ceases; along their route are what appears to have been simply Stone Walls noted on the traces by red dotted lines and scattered stones: there are no ditches or ramparts hereabouts, all appears to have been the work of some rude people which tradition says were "Picts".
No other Roads, traces of Roads, or tradition of Roads are here except those shewn on the Plan .
The long description in the New Stat Acct [Statistical Account] caused this place to be examined and enquired into with great care, and nothing further than the foregoing can be shown or said.
As to an ancient Road being traceable thro' the Parish, that is wrong decidedly: here & there a small Camp similar to the ones shewn here will appear, and now & then a small piece of An Ancient Road.
Would it not be best to simply write "Pictish Remains"in Old English, embracing all the features as what their original uses were is now a Mystery.
As to their being "Roman Ways"their appearances on the Plans will shew they are not. |

Along the northern boundary of this Parish are scattered numerous Cairns or Tumuli of various sizes but generally small; they are very numerous around Mulloch Hill and St Muchrieha's Cross, and no doubt mark the sites of Conflicts now forgotten: to give any definite origin to them is impossible, but tradition points to the Parish of Aboyne as the scene of many conflicts between the Picts and Danes. Macbeth the Usurper was likewise put to death near here in Lumphanan Ph. [Parish] where his "Cairn"still remains, so that it may be inferred that their origin & numbers arise from many a now forgotten battle field. |

The New Stat. [Statistical] Account leans to the idea that this was simply a place of Shelter for the inhabitants Cattle during the foray of any hostile Clan; and its natural position is favourable for such a purpose. the "Legends of the Braes O'Mar" has it that the Danes when retreating from "Culblean" made a stand here & were again routed by Malcolm Clanmore. |

A large stream issuing out of the lower end of Loch Davan, which forms, throughout its course which is south eastward, the boundary betwixt the parishes of Logie Coldstone, Glenmuick and Aboyne and Glentanner. But it only receives this name from the above mentioned Loch, to where a stone marked A & B stands on its left bank, situated immediately below the farmsteading of Monandavan, after which point it receives the name of the Dinnet Burn to where it empties its waters into the River Dee at the Mill of Dinnet. |
