075 | Gordon's Hospital (Continued) when a proper opportunity offers. By a bye law of the governors April 3rd 1755 the apprentice fee, is fixed at £100 Scottish money. and the Sum of £5 Sterling is allowed at the expiry of the indenture provided the apprentice has conducted himself so as to deserve it. In 1772 the governors obtained a Charter from the Crown, incorporating them into a body politic, under the name and title of the President & governors of "Robert Gordon's Hospital in Aberdeen" By that Charter they are Capable, in law, of acquiring and enjoying lands, tenements, and hereditaments, of every denomination, and to sue, and be sued, under that name and title, in any Court or Courts whatever. The funds of the institution have been well and economially managed, and considerably improved by the purchases of landed property, which by rising in value, has become very productive & profitable. In the year 1816, a magnificant grant was made to the institution by the late Alexander Simpson Esqr. of Colliehill, who demised, in trust, to the Principal & Professor of Marischal College & University, and the four Ministers of Aberdeen, his lands and estates of Barrack, in the Parish of New Deer, and Crichie, in Old Deer, in the County of Aberdeen, the rent of which was upwards of £700 Sterling for the benefit of this instution, so that the present annual revenue is about £4,000 sterling By an old arrangement with the Principal & Professors. of Marischal College, the President & governors, are entitled to recommed anually. four boys who shall be allowed to attend the Mathematical and Natural Philosophy Classes, and accordingly four are anually recommended. Within those few years, the efficiency of the hospital has increased for training & educating Youth.
