Piggeries. - Pig-keeping is not common within the District.
Where piggeries exist they are of the usual character, and in one
case, where the premises were not suitable, the piggeries are to be
removed in May.

Pollution of Rivers. - A Sub-Committee has been appointed
regarding the pollution of the Carron. The question is largely
bound up with that of the formation of a Special Drainage District
for Larbert, Stenhousemuir, Camelon, Carron, and Carronshore,
all which, as well as some chemical works, drain into the river.
The Avon is polluted by coal washings from collieries in the
Parish of Slamannan, and the owners have been notified to dis-
continue the offence.

Scavenging of Villages. - Five scavengers are employed by
the Local Authority. Their Districts are as follows:- (1) Larbert
and Stenhousemuir, (2) Camelon and Lock 16, (3) Laurieston and
Polmont, (4) Redding village, (5) Slamannan. Their duties are
confined to cleansing the streets and the surface channels.

Infectious Diseases. - The Notification Act did not come
into operation until February 1st, 1892.
The principal outbreak to which my attention was called during
1891 was of enteric fever in Camelon. The disease was confined to
Gordon Street, and attacked eight persons altogether. Four cases
were sent to the Falkirk hospital and the rest treated at home.
Six of the patients lived in a large three-storey tenement recently
erected. The arrangements for the disposal of house refuse were
very unsatisfactory, the ashpits being too near the houses and
provided with long shoots from the upper storeys, these shoots
conveying foul smells to each flat. The trapping of the drains
was incomplete. The ashpits and shoots have been removed, and
the drains are under repair.
At the colliery row of Jawcraig, in the parish of Falkirk, several
cases of enteric fever occurred early in the year. One proved
fatal; two were sent to hospital. The water supply was at fault,
and water is now being taken from a different source.
At Slamannan a case of scarlet fever was intimated from a
house containing a large family. The patient was sent to hospital,
and the disease did not spread.
