Wallacestone. - The village stands very high, the ground sloping
from it on three sides, so that there is good natural drainage. On
the south side the surface channels terminate in the fields, which
are irrigated by the drainage. On the north side West Quarter
Burn ultimately receives the slop and surface water.
Falkirk Parish. - Laurieston. - Surface channels along the sides
of the streets receive the house water. These, where necessary,
are carried underground across the road and into the adjoining
streamlet which passes through the carse of Falkirk into the Forth.
Pipe drains are about to be substituted for part of these open
watercourses, and this will effect a considerable improvement in
the sanitary condition of the village. The plans have been
prepared by Mr. Denholm.
Glen village is provided with surface channels consisting of fire-
clay inverts. They are at the outer edge of the footpath, and are
kept very clean by the inhabitants; indeed, some of the gutters
are pipe-clayed regularly once a week.
Bonnybridge. - Much of the property belongs to one firm, and
is regularly scavenged by a man employed for the purpose. A
number of houses are connected by a drain with the Bonny Water,
and a surface channel along the main road conveys slop water into
this stream.
Muiravonside Parish. - Maddiston drains by surface channels
into Maddiston Burn. The channels are rough and irregular.
Several houses at the end of the village furthest from the burn
have a covered drain.
Standrig. - A gutter in front of the houses is cleaned by a
local scavenger. It is connected with a field ditch.
Blackbraes. - In "the square" there are well-formed surface
channels, which are regularly cleaned by scavengers employed by
the proprietors. In the roadside part of the village open channels
enter a field at the lower end, where irrigation or stagnation takes
place.
Slamannan Parish. - At Burn Row surface channels convey slop
water into the burn which joins the Avon.
At Binniehill the surface channels are in bad repair and too near
the houses. Here, also, they are connected with a burn which
enters the Avon.
Slamannan. - At the back of one section of the houses is a drain

- a 12-inch glazed and jointed pipe - which enters the Avon. It
is quite inaccessible to most of the houses in the village, but
receives the sewage of about a dozen properties. Excepting
another short line of pipe in one part of the main thoroughfare,
the village has no proper underground drainage, the surface
channels - which are causewayed and kerbed, and in fair order -
receiving the slop water which finds its way by one course or
another into the Avon.
Limerigg drains into the Black Loch. The surface channels are
of brick, and are at a fair distance from the houses, but only a
rough trench connects them with the loch.
Lochside also drains into the Black Loch.
Barnsmuir. - The houses drain into the roadside, and the sewage
stagnates there.

Dairies, Cowsheds, and Milkshops. - No complete inspec-
tion has yet been made. The amount of cubic space and the
general sanitary condition vary very much. In one byre the
cubic space per cow is 1500 feet, and in another 250. The new
regulations will be enforced during the year, but at present the
amount of air space to be insisted on per cow is being reconsidered
by the Sub-Committee.

Slaughter-houses. - One new slaughter-house has been built
and licensed in Stenhousemuir. It is in every way suited for the
purpose. In one case the use of a slaughter-house has had to be
prohibited, the same premises having been used for byre, stable,
and slaughter-house.
There are about twenty-two slaughter-houses within the District.
Various defects have been pointed out to, and remedied by, the
owners during the year.

Common Lodging-houses. - There are five within the Dis-
trict - three in Laurieston and two in Airth. None of them are
in a very satisfactory condition.

Bakehouses. - There are twenty-three retail bakeries in the
District. In two cases complaint has had to be made regarding
the sanitary condition - one as to drainage, and the other as to
want of cleanliness of the walls and ceiling. A good feature of
nearly all the bakeries is that there are no drain connections within
them.
