In pursuance of the Act of the 17th Year of the present
King, for granting to His Majesty a Duty upon all
male Servants retained or employed in the several Capacities
following; viz. Maitre d'Hotel, House Steward,
Master of the Horse, Groom of the Chamber, Valet de Chambre,
Butler, Under-butler, Clerk of the Kitchen,
Confectioner, Cook, House-porter, Footman, Running-Footman,
Coachman, Groom, Postillion, Stable boy,
Helpers in the Stables, Gardener, not being a day
labourer, Park-keeper, Game-keeper, Huntsman, Whipper-in;
whether such Servants have been employed in
one or more of the said Capacities, or in any other business
jointly, with one or more of the said Capacities of a Servant;
you are thereby requested and desired to make out
within Fourteen Days of the Date Hereof a List of the
greatest Number of such Servants as have been retained or
employed by you between the 25th of March 177- and
the 25th of March last, which must be signed by yourself,
expressing their Christian and Surnames, and the Capacities
in which they severally served; and in pursuance of
the Act of the 19th Year of the present King, you
are further desired to deliver to me at the same Time
a Declaration signed by yourself of the Number of Servants
you mean to pay for in any other Parish or Place, under
Pain of incurring the Penalties recited in the said Acts.

Note, That by the Act of the 17th Geo. [George] III. the Assessors or
Surveyors are required to surcharge all Masters or Mistresses
double the Duty for every Servant omitted to be returned by
them to the Assessors. And the Act of the 19th of Geo. [George] III.
subjects every Master and Mistress to a Penalty of 40 l, [£40] who
does not deliver in a List of his or her Servants in one Parish
according to any Declaration signed by him or her in another;
and if no Declaration is signed in one Parish, expressing what
Servants are to be paid for in another, the Assessors or Surveyors
are required to surcharge all Masters and Mistresses for every
Servant who has been retained during the preceeding Year within
the Parish for which the Assessment is made, and who is omitted
in the List delivered by him or her in the said Parish.
