E106/25/1/13 [page] 13 E106/25/1 Peebles 24th November 1802. Sir, I take the Liberty of informing you that I have by this nights Carrier, transmitted to you a certified Copy of the valuation Roll of this County with a List of the Freeholders of the County, as they stand upon the Roll, made up at last Michaelmass meeting on the 5. of October. As to the valuation Roll, I humbly beg leave to make the following Observations - The last Cast was made up in the year 1761 by Mr. Boswell Accomptant in Edinr [Edinburgh] - In place however of following the plan adopted by him of stating the cumulo valuation of each Pro prietor in each Parish without specifying the particular Lands - I have searched into the old valuation Rolls Since the 1657, downwards - and where I discovered the division of the valuation of any particular Lands I have, in the Book now sent, specified the valuation of each particular farm, as ascertained by the Commis sioners of Supply. In looking into the Books of Supply I find that the Estates belonging to the Duke of Queensberry and the Earl of Traquair have been seperately valued - but the Calculations of each are erroneous - therefore I was under the necessity of inserting the cumulo va luation of each of these nobleman's properties in each Parish in which they are respectively situated tho' [continued on page 14]

E106/25/1/15 [page] 14 [continued from page 13] tho' I have enumerated the names of the several properties belonging to them. Of late too the Duke of Queensberry has disposed of his Lands of Easter Happrew in Stobo Parish to yourself and the Earl of Traquair has sold his Lands of Ormiston in Innerelithen Parish to Mr. John Scott Writer to the Signet but owing to the erroneous Calculations in the Schemes of Division before attested to, I was obliged to omit specifying the valuation of these two properties seperately. In the Parish of Linton I understand too, that Mr. Chatto has disposed of part of his Lands to the late Mr. Robert Renton writer in Edinr [Edinburgh] Mr. Alexander Goldie Writer to the Signet and a Mr. William Gordon but [alas] I could not learn what particular parts of this Estate were sold, nor no application made to the Commissioners to have then divided - I have stated the whole as still the property of Mr. Chatto. The Parishes of Dawick and Kailzie are long since suppressed - tho' I have taken them in seperately in the Book now sent as they stand in the former Rolls however for your Satisfaction. I beg leave to state that the Lands in Dawick Parish were annexed to Drummelzier and Stobo and those of the Parish of Kailzie to Traquair and Innerleithen, of course the valuation of these Parishes will stand as follows viz.
