Hearth tax transcription

Edinburgh 16 Feb 1694

In presence of John Earle of Tweeddale Lord
high Chancellor Compeared James Burnet
sub Collr [Collector] of the Hearth-Money within the shires of
Peibles & Selkirk. Who being sworn & examined
Declared, That the forsd [forsaid] List of hearths Extending
to Three thousand four hundred & fourty seaven
Whereof Two thousand Nyn hundred & fifty eight
payed, and two hundred & twenty Nyne not payed, Besids
Ministers Manses, which are notted in every paroch
Is a just & true accompt & List of all the hearths
of the forsd [forsaid] twenty one paroches in Peebles &
& Selkirk shires. To the best of his knowledge
Excepting the Hearths of poor which Extends to
Two hundred sixty seaven. And that he hes used
his outmost endeavours, Conform to proclamations
of Councell, anent the Ingathering of the hearth money
to attaine to the knowledge of all the hearths within the
forsd [forsaid] bounds. And that he hes not wittingly or willingly
concealed any, bot given up the samen truely as sd [said] is
and this is the truth as he shall ansuere to God
