Att Edinburgh The Second
Day of March Jaj vj cts nyntie Four years [2 Mar 1694]

In Presence off The Earle of the Earle of Linlithgou
Compaired James Whyt Commisrs [Commissioners] Clerk of Lauder SubCollector
of the Hearth money in the shyre of Berwick who being sworne
and examined Declared that the forsaid List of Hearths Extending
to Fyve thousand four hundred & Seaventy
which are payed unto him Is ane true and Just List of all
the Hearths of the forsaid pairoches to the best of his
Knowledge But as to the deficients and poor of the sd [said]
shyre Depones he knowes not what the Lists therof
are (he not haveing surveyed the same) They being
surveyed Conform to the Act of Councell be Patrick
Hoom of Restoune Mr alexander Cockburne and James
McDowgall as they who wer appynted by my Lord
Polwarth and the other Commissioners of the shyr
Conform to the sd [said] Act And Depones that he hes
used his outmost endeavor by Quartering Conform
to the proclamationes of Councell annent the Ingathering
of the Hearth money and to attaine to the knowledge
of all the hearths of the sd [said] parochens And that he hes
not willingly or wittingly concealed any but giuen
up the samen as said is, And this He depones
to be of a truth as he shall ansr [answer] to God
