Interior. Retort House: View of retort benches 1 and 2 from SSW where the coal is heated to produce coal gas and its by-products. The hydraulic main can be seen above the retorts. This closed, water-filled trough with its one way valve allows the gas to enter the water where some tar and ammonia is removed as the gas bubbles through on its way to the condenser.

Interior. Exhauster House: view from E of Henry Balfour and Co. Ltd. (Leven, Fife) Livesey Washer (removes last of the tar from the gas using water, bottom) and Rotary Scrubber (removes remaining ammonia using water and revolving brushes, top). The Exhauster can be seen in front of the scrubber and washer. This drew the gas from the retorts into the hydraulic mains and through the other processes which remove the by-products from the gas such as ammonia and tar.
