The angles at the points of intersection are
filled with circular discs 2" in diameter.
Having been informed that George Williamson
Latheron-Mains had recently discovered a
lost portion of the sculptured stone taken
from this barn by John Nicholson and
now in the National Museum I called
at the farm & asked to see it. I saw
the four brothers who all expressed com:
:plete ignorance of the discovery. As
Nicholson's information was very circum:
:stantial I suspect that for some reason
they do not wish me to see the fragment!

Broch Smerral (85)
About 1 m [mile] N. by W. North by West] of Latheronwheel House
and about 130 yds. [yards] E. [East] of the road that leads
up the glen of the Latheronwheel burn is a
broch. It is overgrown with grass except
where the base of the wall is at one or two
places visible. The diameter over all is
some 63' and the highest elevation about
12'. Towards the SE. [South East] there appear to be
remains of outbuildings. The ruin seems
to have been pillaged for stones to a small
extent at one time.

end of a rocky ridge are the remains
