16th July 1910 Bruan Broch (--)
J [Jocelyn] & I. bicycled northwards to Bruan.
At Bruan on the S. [South] side of the road are
the remains of a broch for the most part
overgrown with turf. The tower has
risen from the centre of a hillock cut off
by a ditch 28' wide from the surrounding
level and further protected by a breastwork
along the top of the scarp. The ditch where
preserved is some 8' below the top of the breast:
:work or parapet and about 3 1/2' below the
top of the counterscarp but except on the
W. [West] it has been almost obliterated by cultiva:
:tion. The base of the broch is some 31'
distant from the edge of the ditch. It appears
to have had a diameter over all of some
50' and has an elevation of from 9' - 10'.
From conversation with the farmer of the
croft, Sinclair by name, I learned of a
sculptured stone at his brother's farm at
Mid-Clyth.
Calling at the Croft of "Brough" I bought
from the crofter for a couple of shillings a
nice little stone mortar from the broch
of Gunn's Hillock - we were here treated
to milk & a performance on a gramophone!
