been sharply scarped all round and the
fragmentary ruins on the top appear to be
those of a broch. The construction has, however,
been so much pillaged that definite measure:
:ments are unobtainable.
On the heath between the broch & the road
were beautiful clumps of the white gentian
some of the plants bearing over three dozen
flowers.

Broch Skinnet (7)
On the W [West] side of the Thurso Road about 1/4
m. [mile] SSW. [South South West] of Skinnet farmhouse are the
remains of a broch. The E [East] side has been
entirely removed and a segment representing
less than half of the structure overgrown
with grass is all that now remains.
It poured rain from about 2. o'clock and
we got back to Thurso in a dripping
condition.

6th Augt. [August] 1910
Another wet, foggy day. Wrote up notes
& visited the Thurso Museum, St Peter's Church,
& the Ulbster Stone at Thurso East.
In Thurso Museum are preserved three
old hand bells.
No.1 is the oldest hand bell I have
met with. It is 7 6/8" in height of which
the handle accounts for 4 1/4". Across the
