[Situation] On the N.W [North West] point of the parish of KirKcolm. on Corsewall Point
This building consists of a [good] Substantial Tower built of Stones a first Stone of which was laid by [Mr] Leitch on the 17th of June 1815 the [light] was exhibitted Sepr [September] 16th 1816. The [lantern] is placed on the top of the tower. The [reflectors] are fitted upon an upright Shaft a frame constructed with four faces [which] are made to revolve by a train of [machinery] On two of the opposite faces of this [frame] the light is of the natural appearance on the other two sides Shades of red [glass] are placed before the reflectors. The revolution of this apparatus exhibits a light resembling a Star of the first [magnitude] and one of a brilliant red color [alternately] Each light appears in its brightest state at intervals of every two minutes and gradually becoming less [luminous] is eclipsed. This characteristic effect produced by the [alternate] red & white light with intervals of darkness is similar [to] the light on the Bell Rock. Like all the northern light houses place is furnished with a Barometer Thermometer and rain guage here is [a] good sun Dial. The light Keepers dwelling with cellars for oil & other stores is apart from the lighthouse but is connects by a narrow passage or apartment affording to [the] light keeper a convenient communication between his dwelling & the lighthouse. The building is situated [on] a projecting rock part of Corswall Point & has about 10 acres of land adjoining it attached to it. near it is a Boat Quay or creek with crane for its use.- most part of this description is [abridgement] of description given in Statistical account of Wigtownshire. |

"On the farm called Kirkbride there was once a church dedicated to St Bride It foundations may still be traced a part of the churchyard wall forms the Side of a Cottage. A tenant on the adjoining land remembers that forty years ago he dug up decayed pieces of coffins with iron handles Skulls and other bones.
