017.03 An elegant building, built in a neat Style of Architecture with Play grounds Attached, beautifully Situated on elevated ground off Spittal Street. Was erected in 1854 at an expense of about £4,600. The town Subscribed £2800 together with a donation of £1000 from Colonel Tennant, the remainder was Subscribed by various Persons in the Burgh etc. There are Seven teachers in Connection with this School, including the Janitor, four of whom receive yearly Salaries from the town Council along with the School fees, the other three teachers salaries are derived from School fees. The janitor is Allowed free quarters in a part of the building. All the teachers are Appointed by the Magistrates and town Council. The School rooms are both Spacious and lofty and well Adopted for the Purposes they are intended. Affords tuition in the various branches of a Classical, Commercial, & Mathematical education and the Modern languages, also Drawing and Music. Average Attendance about 365.
