HUME CASTLE (Ruins of) | [Continued from Page 21] Hume Castle was unable to stand the effects of Colonel Fenwick's canons and was obliged to surrender - The interior presents nothing of interest but the old well and a portion of an original Wall, measuring about 6 feet in thickness, the greater portion having been converted into a kitchen garden. Exactly below the Trig: [Trigonometrical] Station a stone statue been built in the Wall, with the following inscription 1829. Lat: N: [Latitude: North] 55 40 5 Long: W. Greenw: [Longitude West Greenwich] Castle base above high watermark of sea at Berwick 742 feet. Observed by Sir Thomas Brisbane 14th April 1829. |
