A parish in the county of Berwick, district of the Merse - It is bounded by Coldingham on the N [North] by Ayton and Foulden on the East, by Hutton & Edrom on the South, and by Bunkle on the West. The Whiteadder separates it from Edrom and Hutton parishes; and a deep ditch which has been executed for the purpose of draining Billymire Morass separates it from Bunkle and Coldingham - The extent of this parish is about 3½ by 3 miles - Among the several eminences which project from the Lammermoorhills into the low Country of Berwickshire, Chirnsidehill is a remarkable one - It is distinguished by its elevation and semicircular aspect to the South, joined with the great expansion of its summit and its gradual declination to the Whiteadder - It commands a view in Scotland - The landscape is that of a plain, waved with long ridges, running chiefly in one direction and of more than 25 miles in extent, from the bay of Berwick to the Teviotdale hills, on the West; while directly south, and at almost the same distance, the famed hills and chases of Cheviot form a very striking boundary - About 60 or 70 years ago says the writer of the old statistical account of 1794 - "this prospect, altho striking and noble, was a naked one, and had little or nothing of the beauty arising from extensive agriculture, enclosed fields or Plantations. If some groves or strips of trees marked, here and there, the seats of the gentry or nobles which |

[Continued] besides these, and a few enclosures joined with them, hardly any thing but waste land, or the poorest Culture, was discoverable. Nature, indeed, wore a robe that indicated a deep soil - the uncultivated grounds produced immense tracts of heather, overspread with thick furze, or tall whins, and in some drier places, with broom, which in the spring, and through the summer, shed the golden gleam of their flowers, and their fragrance, all around - The eye of a spectator, on Chirnsidehill, now has in prospect a Country, of the extent described, all of it in remarkable Cultivation; the cornfields and pasture lands, almost everywhere enclosed and divided by hedges and ditches - Large plantations not only appear around the gentlemen's seats, but reach, in several places, to the extremity of their lands; so that they seem to be conjoined to each other - " The progress of agriculture has added greatly to this richness of prospect since the commencement of the present Century ----- Gazeteer Scotland
Chalmers Caledonia in pages 350. & 351 States the following ---
"Chirnside was established as the seat of the Presbytery, soon after the Reformation, and comprehends a dozen parishes. The Kirk town gave its name to the Parish - the ancient appelation was Chernside, which it obtained, from its location |

Now, Carn, or Charn, in the Cambro-British, and Gaelic languages, signifies a heap; Secondarily, a sepulchral tumulus: And, of this Gaelic word the oblique Case is Chuirn; and to this form of the word the Saxon settlers applied their affix Side, to denote its position -- Of old, this church was a Rectory, in the Deanery of the Merse - In the ancient taxatio, the rectory of Chirnside was rated at 50 Merks - In Bagimont's Roll, the tenth of the rectory of Chirnside is rated at £4.0.0 -" The Church is as old as the year 1573 -
The Manse was rebuilt in 1757; and the office houses, which belong to it are still more recent --- There is no portion of Chirnside Parish within any other Parish There is no portion of any other Parish within that of Chirnside -- |

Fullerton's Gazetteer Scotland
New Statistical Acc [Account] Berwicksh [Berwickshire] |

In ancient times, the shire of Berwick seems to have been a separate jurisdiction from the Bailliary of Lauderdale & to have been itself divided into the Merse and the Lammermoor Districts - It is not easy to say what had been the exact boundaries and extent of these three divisions, now almost obsolete - For the purpose of agricultural inquiry, the whole County may be very conveniently considered under two Districts, -- The Merse and the Lammermoor: the former including all the comparatively low land along Tweed, Whiteadder, Blackadder and Eye, and the latter comprehending Lauderdale, along with the more hilly Country peculiarly Called Lammermoor -- According to the general division of the County just pointed out, the Merse designates the whole lower ground from Tweed up the Cultivated slopes of the lower southern range of the Lammermoor hills - including the western parishes of Nuthorn and Mertoun, & forming the largest piece of Compact level ground - diversified only by a few undulations - to be found in Scotland - Mr Blackadder estimates this division to Contain 100.26 acres. |

A river or as it is termed water which takes its rise in the Lammermoor hills in Haddington shire, at a place called White Well, & flowing in a S [South] Easterly direction empties itself into the Tweed a little S [South] W [West] of Berwick --
This river or Water, rises in one of the wildest districts in the South of Scotland; and, in its course passes through varied Scenery - sometimes through Haughs, but generally (in the hilly Country) through places where the hills close in. so as to narrow the valley almost to the bed of the river ---
At Preston Mill, & Haugh, the river escapes from the wild, rocky, moutainous Country, entering the beautiful Valley in which the Tweed runs -- The richest fields succeed the barren waste; Woodlands, orchards and highly cultivated grounds, bespeak wealth & comfort --
The river itself partakes of the Character of the Country, running in gentle streams over a pebbly bed, alternating with long Reaches of Still Water ------ |
