017.02 Applied to that part of the road leading from Chirnside to Allanton which is situated in the hollow immediately outside the Gallow Law.
It is so Called from its being supposed to have been at one time a place of Meeting for Warriors, while others Say Ecclesiastics whose horses were here held -- hence "Hand - Yad - Gate now Handgate Hand being hold & Yad a horse --

017.02 ; 017.03 The road leading from Chirnside to Berwick which passes close to the Waterloo Arms gets the name Underfoot. The Portion of Plantation on the North side of the road is also included in this name. It must be understood that it is only that Portion of road which lies opposite the Village which is so Called --
