No. 21.
County of Ayr
Ph. [Parish] of Mauchline

" In 1685, during the unhappy reign of James VII.
of Scotland, five men belonging to the parish were
Slaughtered by the emissaries of an obnoxious government.
They were buried where they were executed, in
the public green at the Townhead. Over their graves
was a stone bearing the following inscription;-
"Bloody Dumbarton, Douglas and Dundee,
Moved by the Devil and the Laird of Lee,
Dragged these five men to death with gun & sword,
Not suffering them to pray nor read Gods word.
Owning the work of God was all their Crime,
The eighty five was a Saint Killing time."
The hole where the gibbet was fixed is said to be still visible. In 1830
the tombstone was lifted, and a new monument erected to the honor of the Martyrs
upon which the above lines are carefully engraved."
